New York, tarda serata del 30 marzo 1972: Durante un banchetto politico in vista delle elezioni presidenziali statunitensi, organizzato dal candidato sfidante senatore Donald Montgomery, viene uccisa con arma da fuoco una giovane, ricca signora sua grande elettrice, moglie del ricchissimo Peter White, donna sistematicamente adultera che aveva amato negli anni ‘50 l’italiano Vittorio D’Aiazzo, vice questore torinese, e nel 1969 il di lui amico Ranieri Velli: un misterioso individuo, dopo aver ammazzato una guardia giurata che l’ostacolava, è apparso all’improvviso sulla porta del salone da pranzo, ha freddato la donna ed è fuggito riuscendo a eclissarsi. Dell’assassino, mascherato nella parte superiore del volto, appaiono evidenti ai convitati, fra cui siede lo stesso Velli, solo la taglia massiccia, l’altezza modesta e la gran barba grigiastra, tratti caratteristici di Vittorio D’Aiazzo; e per di più, in quelle stesse ore questi non era in Italia ma proprio a New York.Già uscito in prima pubblicazione nel 2010 con GDS Edizioni, questo romanzo è stato rivisto e profondamente modificato dall’autore e nella nuova stesura esce con Tektime. Si basa sulle figure del vice questore Vittorio D’Aiazzo e del suo amico Ranieri Velli, personaggi che agiscono anche in altre opere dell'autore. Si sviluppa nell’anno 1972, dopo Il romanzo “Il metro dell’amore tossico”, ambientato nel 1969, e la storia in parte si svolge a New York e in parte a Torino come già la vicenda del citato lavoro; vi ritroviamo inoltre, insieme ai due personaggi principali, diverse figure comprimarie fra cui l’interessato editore Mark Lines e il gelido miliardario Donald Montgomery, già direttore dell’FBI di New York e ora membro del Senato e candidato alla Presidenza degli Stati Uniti contro il presidente uscente M. N. Richard:La sera del 30 marzo 1972 viene uccisa con arma da fuoco, durante un banchetto elettorale organizzato dal Montgomery, una giovane, ricca signora sua grande elettrice, moglie del ricchissimo Peter White, donna sistematicamente adultera che aveva amato negli anni ‘50 Vittorio e nel 1969 Ranieri: un misterioso individuo è apparso all’improvviso sulla porta del salone da pranzo, dopo aver ammazzato una guardia giurata che l’ostacolava, ha freddato la donna ed è fuggito riuscendo a eclissarsi. A parte Ranieri Velli, cui fa velo l'amicizia, i testimoni ravvisano e indicano come assassino il vice questore che viene accusato d’omicidio, assieme alla sua compagna, dal procuratore niuyorchèse Maxwell, amico e sostenitore del Montgomery. Quest'ultimo brama dimostrare che non s’è trattato, come invece insinua con insistenza il presidente uscente Richard, d’un falso attentato alla sua persona organizzato da lui stesso, per pubblicità elettorale, e purtroppo finito male per errore di mira dello sparatore. Il procuratore distrettuale è del tutto intenzionato a far condannare Vittorio sulla base d’un presunto movente passionale, l’odio per la donna che l'aveva a suo tempo abbandonato. Il vice questore e la fidanzata sono estradati a New York per il processo istruttorio che, com’è noto, negli Stati Uniti avviene in aula, presenti giuria e giudice. Qui siamo ancora solo alle prime battute del romanzo. Diverse pagine tra le successive presentano fasi del dibattimento. La giovane avvocata del D’Aiazzo, la signora Sarah Ford, ipotizza in primo luogo un delitto passionale da parte del marito pluritradito della vittima, il signor White. Quanto a Ranieri Velli, desideroso d’aiutare l’amico ma impossibilitato ad agire personalmente fuori d’Italia, investiga a mezzo dell’agenzia dei ‘private eyes’ Taylor & Taylor. Indagano informalmente anche due collaboratori di Vittorio, i commissari Aldo Moreno e Mauro Sermoni, cercando di dimostrare l’innocenza del superiore e imbattendosi a un certo punto, a Torino, in importanti indizi che, uniti ai dati raccolti da Ranieri e dall'avvocato, condurranno alla soluzione.

Walker then contacts the Head Office of the necktie’s manufacturer – a well-known brand ¬– hoping to trace its customers.The move leads to a dead end.Walker seeks advice from Arturo Mosetti – an enthusiastic thinker with a passion for riddles – who has in the past assisted him in solving complex cases. Before the medical examiner has submitted his autopsy report, a second body is found in the same condition: lying in a supine position, with both his hands on his heart, dark bruises on his wrists and that unusual gold necktie around his neck.In the second victim’s mouth: something odd- a round gold tag with rough, jagged edges. With symbols engraved on its face.The investigators return to the scene of the first murder and find another gold tag. It’s identical. Only with different symbols. These symbols are a clue left by the killer, but Walker is unable to decipher the unusual code. Only one thing is clear: both murders are the work of the same person. The mystery deepens when it is discovered that the tags are actually made of gold.Walker instructs his team to contact all the Jewellers and Goldsmiths of the city. Surely someone among them must know where these tags came from. Other officers from Walker’s team begin investigating possible suspects. Of particular interest, is a Mr. Merli, whose fingerprints are found at the scene of the first murder. Although Merli is in a relationship with the first victim’s wife and his alibi seems to hold up, Walker keeps him under strict surveillance. The jewellers and goldsmiths soon start providing their information regarding the tags: they are poorly handmade, an amateurish job. None of them has ever seen them for sale. Right when the investigations appear to have stalled, a third victim is found, with the same characteristics as the previous two. The prime suspect is, once again, Merli who, a week before, had threatened to kill the victim during a violent argument with him. The investigators are on his back, waiting for him to make a wrong move.He is under surveillance night and day, but apart from a gambling habit and his marital infidelity, nothing stands out about him. And when a new body is found, he is in the clear. Merli couldn’t have committed this murder: two plain-clothes agents had kept him under surveillance all night. He hadn’t left the house, so he couldn’t be the killer. Unless, of course, he had an accomplice. This is the thought that torments Inspector Walker: perhaps his lover – the first victim’s wife – had helped him commit the last murder. And with the discovery of yet another body, Merli is absolutely ruled out as a suspect. Then something occurs that will unravel David Walker’s life and investigation.
