Ma come mai quel papiro si trovava in India visto che, stando all'analisi testuale, si tratta d'un componimento redatto in Galilea e Giudea, nel corso degli anni 28-50 dello I secolo? Precisamente d'un diario tenuto da Levi Matteo, componente il gruppo itinerante di Gesù di Nazareth? E come sarebbe mai giunto quasi subito nell'induista e buddista penisola indiana? Non solo: quel documento potrebbe essere il testo evangelico perduto di cui aveva scritto, al principio del II secolo, il vescovo Papia di Gerapoli in una lettera dove, oltre a richiamare vangeli in greco che sarebbero stati riconosciuti canonici dal “Canone Muratoriano” e dal documento d'Ireneo “Contro le eresie” attorno all'anno 180, il prelato citava un vangelo redatto “nella lingua dei giudei”, cioè in ebraico o in aramaico. Non era stato d'altronde solo il vescovo Papia a parlare di quel testo perduto, ne avevano scritto anche gli antichi studiosi Ireneo di Lione ed Eusebio di Cesarea.
